Mercado de San Miguel Madrid: The Complete Food Market Guide

Mercado de San Miguel is Madrid's most beautiful food market — a 1916 cast-iron structure of glass walls and ornamental ironwork, steps from the Plaza Mayor, housing some 30 stalls selling the best versions of Spanish food and drink in a space that's simultaneously a serious food destination and one of the most photographed interiors in the city. It's unashamedly tourist-facing and unashamedly excellent, which is a combination that doesn't happen as often as it should.

The market operates all day (10am to midnight most days, later on weekends) but is best visited in the morning before noon, when the stalls are at their freshest and the crowd is manageable, or in the early evening vermouth hour (around 1–3pm) when Madrileños treat it as a serious aperitivo destination. The late-evening crowd is largely tourist; the midday crowd is genuinely mixed.

What to eat: the anchovy (boquerón) pintxos from the dedicated anchovy stall are the market's most famous item — brined white anchovies on bread with olive oil and a vinegary kick. The jamón ibérico stall slices to order at prices that reflect quality (Joselito and Cinco Jotas both have representation). The oysters at the seafood counter are from Galicia and properly cold. The vermouth comes from a tap at the drinks bar with olive and chip accompaniments. The tortilla española at the egg stall is the correct benchmarking exercise for comparing against the versions served across the rest of Madrid.

The market connects directly to the Plaza Mayor via its north entrance. Budget around €20–30 per person for a proper market lunch or grazing session with wine.
