Royal Palace of Madrid: Europe's Largest Royal Palace

The Palacio Real de Madrid is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family and the largest royal palace in Europe by floor area — a vast Baroque edifice of 135,000 square metres containing 3,418 rooms, though only a fraction are open to the public. The palace was built on the site of a medieval Moorish fortress and an earlier Alcázar that burned in 1734, with construction of the current structure beginning under King Felipe V and completed in 1764. The building's exterior — a white limestone and granite block of extraordinary grandeur overlooking the Manzanares River valley — creates one of the most imposing architectural views in Spain.

The palace interior open for public visits includes the Royal Armoury, the throne room with its stunning ceiling fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, the royal dining room where the table is set as if for a royal banquet, and the remarkable collections of Flemish tapestries, Stradivarius violins, royal porcelain, and paintings by Velázquez, Goya, and Caravaggio. The sheer scale of the gilded state rooms can feel overwhelming after a while, but the quality of individual rooms and collections rewards sustained attention. The Sabatini Gardens adjacent to the north facade and the Campo del Moro gardens on the western slope below the palace offer beautiful formal garden spaces with views of the palace exterior.

The palace is closed on days when the Spanish Royal Family is using it for official events — always check the website before visiting as closures can occur without advance notice. The surrounding Plaza de Oriente is one of Madrid's finest public spaces, a formal garden square with an equestrian statue of Felipe IV at its centre that provides elegant views of the palace facade and the Teatro Real opera house opposite. The Palacio Real and Teatro Real together anchor the western edge of Madrid's historic centre, an easy walk from the Gran Vía, the Puerta del Sol, and the Palacio Real gardens.
