Retiro Park Madrid: Boating, Crystal Palace & Weekend Life
El Retiro (Parque del Buen Retiro) is Madrid's great park — 350 hectares of manicured gardens, wooded paths, fountains and monuments right in the city centre. On weekends, the entire city seems to descend here to row boats, watch street performers, browse the Sunday book market and escape the Madrid heat under the shade of centuries-old trees.
Boating on the Grand Pond
The Estanque Grande — the park's large rectangular lake — has been hire-boating since the 19th century. Rent a rowing boat (€7.50/45 minutes, cash only at the kiosk) and glide past the colonnaded monument to Alfonso XII. Peak weekend afternoons see 80+ boats on the water. Go on a weekday morning for a serene experience.
Palacio de Cristal (Crystal Palace)
A stunning iron-and-glass Victorian pavilion (1887) now used as exhibition space by the Reina Sofía. Free entry. The temporary exhibitions often feature major contemporary artists. The reflections on the surrounding lake are spectacular in soft light.
The Sunday Book Market (Feria del Libro)
Along the Paseo de la Infanta Isabel, second-hand booksellers set up stalls year-round (especially Sundays). Old maps, vintage postcards, philosophy paperbacks, comic books and Spanish-language classics — a Madrid treasure hunt.
